  1. An A4 Letter.

  3. I use a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 500 printer, so all the margin settings are based on this.  Obviously to cater for your own printer you will need to adjust the margins accordingly, using my examples as a guideline only.  However, I thought it would be helpful to include them.

  5. 1.  On your printer menu, set your paper size to A4, leaving the default graphics margin settings unaltered.

  7. 2.  Set up a 'New Document' in Ovation with the following settings:
  8.                             A4
  9.                             Portrait
  10.                             Single-sided
  11.                             1 Column
  12.                             Margins - top 14mm, left & right 16mm, bottom 6mm.

  14. 3.  Open page one of your document, and its Master page.
  15. All the editing will now take place on the master page.

  17. 4.  Go to your 'Edit paragraph Style' box, and set up any paragraph styles you would like to use in letter-writing.  (Remember you can import these from other stylesheets on disc.)

  19. 5.  Place text frames for your address, the date and the recipient's address.  You might like to place the latter to coincide with a window on a particular size envelope.  (When drawing more than one frame, select your tool with 'adjust').  Type in your address in an appropriate style.  The date can be added in the appropriate box using Ctrl/Insert each time you write a letter.  This is the master page completed for chapter one.

  21. 6.  Go  to 'New chapter' and  'after current chapter'.  On this master page delete your text frames.  Go to 'page guidelines' (note that this option is only available on the master page.)  On this set up a header of 10mm.  For the page number to appear automatically at the centre top of each sheet type 'insert' followed by Shift/Ctrl/C.

  23. 7.  Lastly go to 'Modify Chapter' and specify that Chapter two is to start on page two.

  25. 8.  Now close the master pages, and delete the existing pages one and two.  You will now find that you have a document consisting of two chapters.  Chapter one  will consist of your headed page, and chapter two will be all the subsequent pages, which will be blank apart from the number at the top of each.  Just the job for those lengthy epistles !
  26. Save your stylesheet with a meaningful name.  (I used 'A4Letter')

  28. A5 Letter.

  30. More commonly I find myself writing shorter letters on my usual pad of Sainsbury's writing paper.  This particular paper actually produces a good quality printout on my printer.  Again I am using a HP Deskjet 500.
  31. 1.  Set up a New document with the following:

  33.                             A5
  34.                             Portrait
  35.                             Single-sided
  36.                             1 Column
  37.                             Margins - Top 12mm, Left 9mm, Right 14mm,  Bottom 8mm.

  39. 2.  Use the same principles for setting up your addresses & date as above.  This time you will need only a single master page as it is to be for only short letters.

  41. 3.  You need to make a couple of adjustments on the 'print setup' menu, the significance of which you will soon see.  Choosing 'Landscape will cause your printout to be turned through 90o.  Change the 'corner y' to 150mm.

  43. 4.  Again save your styleheet  ' A5Letter'.

  45. 5.  To print out your letter, load your notepaper sideways into the printer, lining it up at the back and sides.  I usually just put it  on top of the A4 stack, removing the 'out' tray to do so.  The printer paper size will still be set to A4, so it is in effect treating your notepaper as the righthand side of an A4 sheet.  Hence the reason for setting the 'y corner' to 150mm. in '3' above. (ie. the printer will print from half way along an A4 sheet.
